Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF)
This procedure involves removing the damaged disc between two vertebrae in your lower back and then inserting a spacer or graft into the empty disc space to allow the bones to grow together over time. This is the “fusion”.
Unlike a TLIF, the approach is from the front in the lower abdomen. An access surgeon works with the neurosurgeon to provide a safe corridor to the disc.
Placing a large cage/spacer also indirectly decompresses the nerves.
Sometimes an ALIF may be combined with a posterior approach as well.
